Hello, everyone! I'll post the guidelines here for all to see--ask any questions you like, and good luck to all of us!

What is the Moveable Type Project?

Inspired by the Skin project, it is moving, breathing art. I liked the idea of Skin, but disliked the execution. I wanted to move beyond the dada-like notion of having a meaningless word tattooed on a person's body, and into the realm of a complete work--you would not get a leaf tattooed, and be content knowing that if you stood side by side with all the other people who had ever gotten leaves painted on them, you might make a tree. I would prefer to wear the tree--wouldn't you? And since the Skin project thinks of its members as merely "words," without names or identities once they have been imprinted with their particular combination of letters, I wanted to create something where the words and the models fused, rather than one being seen as more important than the other.

So I offer this alternative. The Moveable Type Project.

I'll write a short-short story. 50 words or less, unless you authorize me for more. You'll get it tattooed anywhere on your body, and in any arrangement, i.e., you can have half on your shoulder and half on your thigh, or any other layout. Unlike the Skin authoress, I won't mandate the font or the presentation--have it done however you like. Once it's done, you'll send me an 8x10 of you with the tattoo readable and visible. If it looks like a sizeable number of people are interested, I'll buy a domain name and make this a full-fledged online publication. You will not get a random word, you will not become "my" word--you'll get a complete story, written specifically for you. (for samples of my writing style, see darkest_peru). You can include artwork with the tattoo, I don't care, as long as the text is readable.

You will have to sign a very loose, non-anxiety inducing contract saying that a.) you'll get the tat and b.) that I have permission to publish the photos of you. I mean, I'm not going to write a story for you if you're going to chicken out. It is very likely that this will run in multiple cycles, each cycle appearing in its own section on the site, much as a quarterly journal would.

Use this site for anything, guys. I'll update about the project, but I hope that we can all become quite mushily bonded tattooed circus folk.

Can I start the story tattoo on one place and have it finish on another?

Can we 'shape' the text on our body?

If you later publish in text form the story I have tattooed on me, will it be dedicated to me? ;)

(I'm SO excited about this!)

Yes, yes, yes--you can arrange the text in any way you want, with attendant artwork or without. See, that way it's a collaboration--you express yourself with the layout.

If I later publish it I will dedicate it to everyone, and there will be a section in the back for model bios. I think this will be too...intimate to slip into another novel. :)

I'm happy to have you in on it, however, most people haven't sent in their contracts, so I'm not sure when it's going forward.
